It’s 9 o’clock on a Friday night and I am strategizing my second trip to Calgary’s newest Italian market. Visions of fresh mozzarella, an entire aisle of olive oils, more assorted olives than I’ve ever seen in Calgary, meats, fresh pizzas and baked on-site cannolis fill my mind as I try to describe to my family why they should all accompany me to Spinelli’s Italian Centre on the south side of town.
Frank Spinelli founded the Italian Centre in 1959 in Edmonton where there are now three of their shops. Now they’ve brought their community-minded business to Calgary and I think they will find us very welcoming!
If you go this weekend, ask for store manager Gino Marghella who is giving away $1,000 in gift cards to customers each day from July 2-July 5. To win, take a selfie with him – then post onto Twitter and Instagram using the hashtags #MeetGino and #StepIntoItaly and tag the @ItalianCtrYYC account.
Here are some cool facts to excite you further:
The Italian Centre has western Canada’s largest deli featuring more than 600 types of meat, cheese and antipasti, including Sardinian Truffle Pecorino.
It is home to the Cathedral of Cheese housing 80 wheels of cheese including Parmesan and Piave Vecchio. A unique structure in Alberta, the impressive showcase is 13’ high and 40’ wide and temperature-controlled.
The café, Spinelli’s Bar Italia, offers authentic Italian bold Kimbo coffee, moreish biscotti and Neopolitan pizzas.
Artisanal bakers can be seen crafting their legendary tiramisu, cannoli and fresh, handmade pastries. Also, warm pagnotta, ciabatta and red fife loaves fresh out of the ample ovens, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
