It’s always nice to sit down with a friend and catch up. It’s downright luxurious when you can meet for lunch sans kids. It’s priceless when the meeting place is at Hy’s Steakhouse in downtown Calgary.
My girlfriend and I sat in a cozy booth, ordered some bubbly and allowed ourselves to relax, gab and eat to our hearts content.
Hy’s lunch menu is a nice balance between the classic steakhouse options and modern choices that are a bit lighter. Whatever your preference, there is one classic item that you must order…the Cheese Toast! It is addicting.
Hy’s Classic Cheese Toast for Two!
Our server was exactly what one expects from a proper steakhouse–he was classy, helpful and did not pressure us at any point, even though we stayed for hours. We asked him for appetizer recommendations and he informed us that they had calamari available. It’s not on the menu but I highly recommend you ask for it anyway! Crispy fried, gluten-free and a little bit spicy due to the fried jalapeno bits that were divine.

I chose to stay very classic with my main and ordered a steak and stuffed potato. The sides we shared as a table were mushrooms (Get an extra order of these if you have to in order to take home leftovers, trust me!) and a peppercorn gravy.
TIP: When your server asks how you would like your steak prepared, I always say “Chef’s choice”. Every cut of meat is different and if you are at a reputable steakhouse, the chef will know how long to cook your selection in order for you to enjoy it with maximum flavour and tenderness.
Both of us were very full but we still ordered Bananas Foster, prepared table-side by our wonderful server!

Everything we ordered was delicious. I took home leftovers and used the steak and mushrooms to make an incredible scramble for breakfast the next morning.
The leftovers made killer Steak & Eggs the next morning!
