There are two things that cause me stress when it comes to swimsuits, shopping for the right one and that time right before you walk onto the beach for the first time that season. Can you relate?
Summer rolls around and your skin that has taken cover under layers of warm clothing is now going to be exposed with varying small degrees of coverage. In my case, being the red-head that I am, that winter skin is pale to the point of translucence. Then there’s the whole issue of what style of swimsuit is flattering for my body type? What is age-appropriate, on-trend or classy? How will this look on me after it gets wet? Will it fall off when I step out of the pool? So many stressful considerations!
After I signed up for Bikini Espy this year, I had a moment (okay, probably a few days) of panic. Not only did I commit to wearing a bikini in public, I said yes to wearing a bikini on 9th Avenue in Inglewood. Not a beach. Not with a cover-up readily handy. Not in a carefully chosen, shaded and private beach area. ON THE STREET. Swimco, a Calgary-based swimwear company, saw some of my anxiety-laden tweets and offered to help me out.
The fit-expert at the Swimco store on 17th Avenue asked me what I had in mind and my description was fairly complex. I wanted a swimsuit that was classy but fresh, enough coverage to feel comfortable in and as flattering as possible for my body type. Less than ten minutes later, she had selected a dozen swimsuits for me to try on and we got down to business.
The fitting room area at Swimco has great three-way mirrors and the fit experts are kind but honest about how the swimwear fits you. Straps were adjusted, different methods of tying straps were demonstrated and alternate styles suggested. At the end, I narrowed my choices down to four really great options and could have happily walked out with any of them.
In the line-up of beautiful, confident Bikini Espy participants you can spot my Swimco selection paired with cowboy boots, a Smithbilt hat, and a natural-looking tan courtesy of Clarins self-tanners.
I still had a short second of anxiety when Megan announced it was Bikini time but it quickly passed and I felt nothing but confident in my Swimco selection.
Thank you Swimco for making my shopping experience fun and for sponsoring my bikini for Bikine Espy!
