I returned home on Thursday from a whirlwind week in the metro D.C. area and New York and I found a box waiting for me filled with items to review and tell my readers about. This wasn’t a normal review request because I don’t really do that on this blog. This was a request with a sobering weight behind it and I hope I can do it some justice in the short time left in this campaign. Please lend me your ears and hearts for a couple of minutes…
On May 1st , the Canadian Women’s Foundation began its 11th annual Campaign to End Violence. During the month, through multiple programs, the Foundation brings together communities across Canada to raise hope for women who have experienced physical or emotional violence. Funds raised during the Campaign help nearly 450 shelters for abused women and their children, and community prevention programs that break the cycle of violence.
Currently more than 6,000 women and children are staying in shelters because it’s not safe for them to be at home. The fact is, there are more than that 6,000 who are not safe at home but are still at home for economic and social reasons and also fear of violence. How can we help? I’m a little late to the party for this campaign but there are two wonderful initiatives that we can all take advantage of until the end of Sunday, May 31, 2015.
