Lederhosen and Schnitzel from Steam Whistle and Wurst!

unnamed (1)It’s October! Calgary has a definite chill in the air and while I am not quite ready to give up on some sunny days, I must admit to some excitement for the coming fall months. To start the month off right, can I suggest some lederhosen, schnitzel and a stein of beer from Canadian craft brewer Steam Whistle?

Steam Whistle Brewing is bringing an authentic Oktoberfest party to Calgary and is inviting us to the ultimate beer celebration on October 4th, at WURST (2437 4 St SW, Calgary) at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance (www.gettickets.ca) and include food and admission. Each ticket comes with a souvenir litre ceramic stein to cheer this renowned beer festival and its first beer fill on us. Wurst says “Come dressed in costume and our staff will too!”

Can you say no to delicious German food, traditional German music and craft beer? I think not!

So, here is your opportunity to win tickets to the event at WURST: Tweet me @LifeWhereWeAre and tell me why you love Oktoberfest, what you will be wearing OR your favourite recipe that uses beer as an ingredient and the winner will be notified by 11:00 AM on Saturday.

Also, you can share your #SteinSelfies to enter to win weekly prizes. Simply take a pic and share it via Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #SteinSelfie. Full contest details at www.steamwhistle.ca/oktoberfest.

Get Oktoberfestive with Steam Whistle’s tips

Oktoberfest wouldn’t be complete without costumes and food! Get in the spirit by dressing the part. The “Dirndl” is the name of the traditional dress worn by Bavarian women consisting of a bodice, blouse and full skirt. If you’re looking to meet a young ‘fraulein’, pay attention to the knot in her apron: A knot on the left means she’s single, on the right means she’s taken and in the back means she’s widowed. The traditional attire for men is known as the “Lederhosen” and includes a dress shirt, suede shorts with suspenders (lederhosen), wool socks and leather shoes. Check out our 7 dress to impress tips here.

Each year in Munich,Germany festival goers consume over 7million liters of beer, 500,000 roast chickens, 240,000 sausages, 70,000 pork knuckles, and a gazillion doughy pretzels! In honour of these customary foods, Steam Whistle has Oktoberfest inspired recipes for Schnitzel and potato salad.
