During and after the flood that brought so much damage to our beautiful city, Calgary felt more like a friendly small town than the sprawling urban city that it is. Strangers became neighbors and neighbors became friends. Helping hands, encouraging words and hot meals were shared willingly and welcomed without suspicion–there was beauty in the middle of the mess. Now we are rebuilding and to make a true recovery Calgary still needs all of its citizens to be friends and neighbors.
The website, YYC is Open, has laid out a plan to help Calgarians rediscover their city while supporting areas affected by the flood. They are making it really easy to find something fun to do with your family that will also help Calgary.
For instance, this weekend there are four great events happening in flood-affected areas.
1st Street Market Walk in Victoria Park! Sat, Jul 20 & Sun, Jul 21
Sun & Salsa Festival in Kensington! Sun, July 21
#IAMbackDOWNTOWN Summer Block Party! Sat, Jul 20
Rock the Walk 3 in the East Village! Sat, Jul 20 –
My family is going out to get to know our neighbors today! You can follow along on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #yycisopen. Better still, you can take your family and be neighborly too! Hope to see you there!
